Eclectic Design, Mastering the Look
If you have ever walked into a restaurant where each plate, and each piece of silverware is a little different, or perhaps the place settings match but each table is a little different and the chairs are a little different, then you’ve experienced eclectic design. Did you fall in love with the look? Having a blend of different styles and motifs that blend together to create a beautifully unique space might be exactly what you’re looking for in your design style then! We call this beautiful blend of styles “eclectic design”, and it can be harder to obtain than you might think. Need some tips and tricks? We have a few to help you out!
Blending Styles Means Being Selective
There are three different characteristics that make style eclectic, it features a diverse and specially selective mix of both aesthetic and functional features.
Mix Visuals – Eclectic design brings a mix of prints, patterns, and textures. This may also include different shapes, compositions, and elements that normally won’t complement each other, but work well when they are the same color or complement the same focal point.
Blend the Past and the Future – The idea behind eclectic design is ensuring that there is a marriage between different time periods, for example you might pair vintage furniture with minimalist art. This blend is important.
Be Picky – Eclectic design may look comfortably effortless, but decorators are usually very picky about what they curate to ensure that everything works well together. The best way to accomplish this look is to have a unifying element, such as theme, color, or texture.
A Few Tips to Make Eclectic Design Easier
If you’re bound and determined to design your space more eclectic, be prepared for it to take a little time. Use these tips to help you acquire everything you need to convert your space into something beautiful:
Try Choosing a Unifying Color – A pleasing color palette can unify the different elements in your room. Try choosing a few colors that get repeated throughout the space, especially with things like rugs, pillows, tables, lamps, and artwork especially if they’re from differing eras.
Put Your Personality Out There – Try using contrast in your artwork, patterns, textures, shapes, and even colors. Add in pieces that convey emotion, or describe you as a person – tying in your own unique personality.
Mix and Match Your Fabric Patterns, Prints, and Textures – When you mix different materials together, it can create depth, changing the way a space looks and feels. Repeat some of the mismatched patterns and textures throughout the space to help create harmony.
Mix Style Genres – Feel free to experiment with different combinations of items to get an idea of what goes together; for example, a vintage velvet sofa that is bright red might match those very modern lamps. Try it out and see!
Make Space for Negative Space – Negative space gives your eye a place to rest in an eclectic room. Break up the design with neutral colors or blank spaces so you don’t get overwhelmed. Remember that the trick with eclectic design is to make sure that there is no singular focal point in the space.
